Green Belief

Being without fear ~ Belief modification for dissolving fears

  • What Is Green Belief?

    Green Belief is:

A one-to-one service practice that uses a belief modification technique (a branch of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy). This technique is proven to assist people in letting go of false and fearful beliefs. Some fearful beliefs include paranoid delusions. People can be preoccupied with such a fear to a point where it affects their relationships with others, their job, and their community.
A source of education that introduces clients to a greater awareness and apprehension of reality and truth concerning their beliefs. Green Belief assists clients in choosing healthier beliefs to replace fear-based ones.
Sensitive and non-judgemental. This practice sees you as a whole being and treats you with the hope that you can, and will recover. This practice encourages you to be part of your healing and recovery process.
A model that represents realistic hope for the potential of recovering.
Not anti-psychiatry and not anti-medication but rather serves to complement other treatment and practices.

  • The process

The Process of Green Belief Practice

The Process of Green Belief Practice builds a peer relationship (short or long-term) to explore problem beliefs, and learn to formulate a realistic goal of recovery.

Green Belief teaches its clients a process of evaluating life circumstances and the resulting beliefs, thoughts and feelings that are experienced. With this learned method of inquiry, clients can make new choices for improving their lives. Beliefs and thoughts are explored through guided discovery rather than directly challenged.
For clients who are consciously ready, Chapman goes beyond cognitive therapy and belief modification techniques which attempt to make change at the level of thought and belief. Chapman points to the essential Self in people so that they re-member their connection to Spirit/Source. Awareness is placed at the level of Being. This is where knowing and feeling is experienced. When clients feel pure Love, fear does not exist.

Beyond belief modification at the cognitive level, clients place awareness at the spiritual level - the heart-centre where high vibration feelings are felt and fears dissolve.

Initial visits may include an introduction to Green Belief practice, a needs assessment, and a readiness assessment to explore alternative ways of perceiving fearful situations.
  • What is your Fear?

Unlike fears that alert us to danger, most everyone has fears that do not benefit them. These kinds of fears are mistaken, or false beliefs that keep us from living fully.

Some of these beliefs cause unwarranted suspicion and even paranoia. Such fears are prevalent.

Oftentimes it is our misinterpretation of things that happen and of people around us that create fear. Our perception may be mistaken.

Many people are preoccupied with fear to a degree that it affects their relations with others and their performance at work.

Thankfully, these fears can be successfully dissolved.

  • About the provider
About the Provider of Green Belief
    • Who is Robert Chapman?[+]
Robert Chapman is a mental health practitioner, author, workshop facilitator and educator. Chapman’s background education includes Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Suicide Prevention and Intervention, Peer Support Training, and methods of counselling and recovery. His specialty in cognitive therapy is particular to belief modification and thought-restructuring. Chapman has a long-time interest in, and understanding of, cognitive therapy and the applications to which it is used. He possesses a large body of knowledge on how the mind is prone to mistaken perceptions, false beliefs (delusions), wrong judgements and misconceptions. Familiar with the mechanics of how such thoughts produce fear about life, death, self and others, Chapman assists people in diminishing — even eliminating — these kinds of fears.
As a Recovery Consultant, Chapman brings education to the mental health community on how to recognize fearful — even paranoid beliefs and how to overcome these to regain sanity. For 20 years, in Canada and the United States, Chapman has lectured on cognitive therapy to mental health care providers, university, college and high school students, and consumers of psychiatric services. His workshops have been featured at provincial, national and international conferences, hospitals, agencies, and educational institutions.
Prior to diversifying into the mental health field in the 1990’s, Chapman received a diploma in Graphic Design, and received the Mohawk College of Applied Arts Board of Governors’ Arts Competition Award (Outstanding Entry in Drawing Category).

In the 1980's, Chapman was a stand-up comedian occasionally backing up Jim Carrey. Recognized as best new stand-up comedian at a well-known comedy club, Chapman appeared as featured stand-up comedian in a full-page local newspaper article.

After fulfilling a six-year Research Assistant position at the Centre for Research in Education & Human Services (Hamilton / Kitchener), Chapman recently moved back to his home town Orillia to be with family.
    • Accomplishments and Awards[+]
Articles written on Cognitive Therapy have been published in magazines, medical/science periodicals, journals, newspapers, and in professional textbooks.

Developed and successfully applied a three-step recovery strategy to eliminate patterns of paranoid thinking in delusions.

Researched and published counter-arguments and disconfirming evidence used to critically re- evaluate delusions, exercise objective thinking, and explore alternative interpretations.

Given written permission from the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center (Boston University) to adapt a psychiatric technology model, Chapman developed an assessment tool for measuring readiness to recognize and disclose delusions, and to accommodate evidence contradictory to false beliefs.

Appeared on TV, in newspapers, periodicals, and magazines for interviews disclosing his past illness in order to reduce stigma and educate publicly about what schizophrenia is and isn't.
Designed and delivered workshop speaking presentations intended to minimize in-patient guardedness and increase a sense of commonality, believability, and connectedness. As a monthly guest speaker for three years at Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital (Patient Education Group), Chapman enhanced doubt surrounding fixed delusions. Staff expressed that in-patients shared for the first time their delusions and that it was believed Chapman’s non-confrontational approach facilitated the eliciting of delusion presence and content.

Received five S.C.O.P.E. (Supporting Consumer Opportunities for Personal Empowerment) awards presented by Hamilton Mental Health Rights Coalition recognizing citizens promoting mental health.

Received Certificate of Recognition for “Ongoing Involvement and Volunteer Service to Help Improve the Lives of Those with Schizophrenia and their Families” (Ontario Schizophrenia Society).

Received scores of commendation letters from mental health professionals and agencies. Recipient of United Way Speaker’s Bureau recognition certificate.

  • Alternative mental health service

    Delivery of Mental Health Services

Psychosocial research shows that society is embracing self-help recovery initiatives to gain greater access to mental health services, to gain more effective client-centred treatment for mental health issues, as well as to pass through long-existing social stigmas surrounding mental illnesses and emotional problems. Society is now at a time to address mental illness issues that have long been unattended, misunderstood, and stigmatized. There is a timeliness for the service of Green Belief for which there is a growing need. Alternative mental health services are being sought after and embraced more than ever before.
Research by the Centre for Research & Education In Human Services (Kitchener, Ontario) and the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services shows a paradigm shift in the way people want mental health services delivered. People want available and accessible self- help initiatives in addition to what they are receiving from the traditional medical model. People are expressing a need for flexible and individualized support. With the presence Green Belief, there is a shorter waiting time to accessing mental health services.
  • How GreenBelief is unique

    How Green Belief Is Unique

Green Belief offers one-to-one education that is tailored to the individual’s mental and spiritual needs.
Green Belief is an intermediate level service between professional degree-holding and volunteer trained provisions. Thus its fee is also set between these.
Green Belief is offered in a milieu of hope, empowerment, and choice in self-direction, and is guided by Psychosocial Rehabilitation Principles.
Being personally familiar with problem-solving recovery issues, Green Belief offers an inner dimension of understanding. (Experience is the best teacher).
Green Belief provides a recovery model for people who are experiencing paranoid delusions.
Absent from Green Belief is a clinical feel and a stigma that people often feel when seeking therapy. With a "deprofessionalized" demeanour, Green Belief sees its shared humanness as helpful in connecting with the client ─ a relationship asset not found in rigidly boundaried conventional practices.
Green Belief discloses its first-person history experience with psychiatric disability when appropriate. This is intended to help establish a relationship and rapport with the client to facilitate the supportive process and to encourage the client to further avail him/herself to the formal mental health system if necessary.
Green Belief is a role model of strength, courage, and determination in recovery success, as well as eliminating stigma and dispelling myths and misinformation surrounding mental illnesses. This is part of the education service provided through sensitivity training workshops and seminars.
Because of its background, Green Belief specializes in belief modification and thought restructuring (a branch of cognitive therapy). Rarely known and hard to find counter-arguments and disconfirming evidence for paranoid delusions of persecution are available.
Green Belief makes available a unique resource of positive, inspirational affirmations. This collection of literature serves to compose the mind with an increasing awareness of love, peace, hope, truth and reality.
"Beyond Belief Modification at the cognitive level, I point clients to their spirit level where awareness is placed at the heart-centre. Where high vibration feelings are felt, fears dissolve."
  • Why aren't there others?

Why Aren’t There Practices Providing This Kind of Service Already?

It is in the current time that fitting services with consumers’ mental health needs is seen as favourable and acceptable by the general public. Not long ago this service idea (Green Belief practice) was perceived as ahead of its time.
By and large, most people are not familiar with the research statistics showing the high prevalence of mental illnesses.
“Older” mental health service providers are entrenched in the traditional medical model, not budging to the new “shared leadership” and client-centred approach found in peer support and in Psychosocial Rehabilitation principles.
When and if appropriate, the provider of Green Belief practice discloses his past experience with mental illness. Disclosure is an admission to having received mental health services and thus having been a consumer of psychiatric services. Most people do not want to do this. The provider of Green Belief is prepared to disclose this where and when necessary.
The very fact that a past consumer of psychiatric services is delivering the services of Green Belief, is a highlighted feature of Green Belief’s practice.

“People believe that stigma (how they may be treated by others) is the worse part of their experience with mental health problems. It makes them feel even more hopeless.”
    —K. McLean

Few people make it their business to decrease the unnecessary stigma surrounding mental illness. The provider of Green Belief was one of the first in Canada to publicly disclose his experience with mental illness. For the last twenty years, the provider of Green Belief has spoken at numerous conferences and appearing in the media in order to reduce stigma and educate on a recovery technique that he discovered himself. Few people have a plan to reduce stigma through its advertising. Green Belief does. With genuineness, sensitivity and humour, Green Belief plays a major part in reducing stigma and making it okay for people to see a mental health peer support worker.
